WHO WE ARE
Our evolution from local retailer to nationwide supplier
Challenge Trophies are a family business who have been serving our local community for almost 50 years. It was set up in 1976 as a retail outlet in North Cheam supplying sports trophies, medals, and awards. Very successful from the start: it quickly became one of the busiest trophy shops in the UK.
The first catalogue was produced in 1977, along with the strapline ‘Every Sports Has A Winner – Every Winner Needs A Trophy’. Over the years, our business has seen a great deal of change to keep up with consumer demands and modern technology. Despite growing significantly, Challenge Trophies is still within the family and we strive to keep a friendly, family-feel to the company.
Over the years, we went from just engraving pewter tankards for Rank Hovis McDougall to also supplying dealer plaques by the 1,000s to AutoCAD in the late 80s. We realised there were two distinct markets being served by our business, the sporting organisations, and events that we had traditionally catered for along with a new corporate client base looking to both reward success within their organisations, with the latter leading to the birth of our Sister company: EC Awards.
The 90s saw the two sons joining the business, and an expansion programme put in places. Two new outlets were opened in Cranleigh and New Malden, and a warehouse in Wallington. Both brands: EC Awards and Challenge Trophies went from strength to strength. This decade also saw the introduction of the popular (even to this day) acrylic award, which was predominantly aimed at businesses.
Into the 2000s and the with the arrival of the internet, with a few of serving a national audience, we set up a website in 2008. By 2010, we closed the shops to focus online which allowed us to provide a more streamlined and higher value national offering. So successful, we had to launch a new website in 2012 to deal with demand, expanded to cover Ireland too.
Since 2012, we have continued to grow steadily, with new trophy and award types being offered often, including custom awards and 3D printed awards. We still continue to serve the UK predominantly, but we now also sell globally, and this market is growing rapidly.
So, what of the future? Our aim is to keep innovating and keep listening to our customers with the aim of maintaining the best solution available around our core strengths of value for money and excellent customer service.
